April 22nd, 2021
As part of our interviews with local series partners, we talk to Tom Greasty, RNLI Coxwain.
Tom, has been a RNLI volunteer in Swanage for 21 years. He owns Swanage Sea Fishing, who provide fabulous mackerel fishing trips for the school and youth groups visiting Cumulus Outdoors. Here he shares his experience as a lifeboat Coxwain in Dorset. He tells us what he enjoys most about this role as well as what he finds most challenging.
What is your role within the RNLI? What do you do and when do you do it?
I’m one of the deputy 2nd Coxswain’s and a deputy 2nd Mechanic on the ALB (All Weather Lifeboat) as well as Helmsmen on the ILB (Inshore Lifeboat)
How long have you been in the RNLI and what does it mean to you?
I have been a volunteer at Swanage lifeboat station for 21 years. It’s a massive part of mine and my family’s life, it’s a big commitment that becomes a way of life.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
Sometimes things can be challenging as we go to a real mix of jobs in some very tough conditions. Some shouts don’t always have the best outcomes, even if we have done everything possible. It never gets any easier.

What is the most enjoyable part of your role?
For me, the most enjoyable part is the teamwork. We’re a really tight crew and have some great fun together.
How does someone get involved in joining the RNLI?
The best way to show an interest in joining is to simply pop down and say hi! We usually train every Wednesday night, but it’s all a bit different at moment with Covid restrictions.
Lastly tell us about you, what do you get up to when you’re not RNLI – ing?
I have two young boys so when I’m not fishing or lifeboating I try and spend as much time with them as I can.
