Coasteering is one of the best outdoor activities in Dorset and a unique way to explore the Jurassic Coast. Join our experienced instructors for action-packed session scrambling over rocks, exploring sea caves, sea swimming and jumping from cliffs into the water below.
This fun-filled sea and cliff-based adventure activity is suitable for all children aged 8 and over and is tailored to the needs and ability of your group. It’s the perfect choice for intrepid families holidaying in Dorset and a great option for birthdays, stag and hen dos or business away days.

Jurassic Coast coasteering
All of our coasteering sessions take place at Dancing Ledge, a scenic location on the world-famous Jurassic Coast. Meet us at our base, before kitting up and making the scenic 20-minute walk to our starting location for a memorable day out.
Once we reach our cliff side location, the instructors will give a through safety briefing and explain how to enter and exit the water. You’ll then follow a pre-established route along the cliff face, where you’ll have the chance to do some low level climbing and cave exploration, before experiencing the thrill of jumping from ledges into the sea. Along the way you’ll discover hidden coastal secrets and experience the beauty of the Dorset coast from a completely unique perspective.

Cumulus Outdoors has over 25 years’ experience in the outdoor industry and we pride ourselves on having highly qualified instructors for all of our sessions. We often exceed the minimum staffing ratios.
The team operate under a strict ‘challenge by choice’ motto, which means you only jump from a level you’re comfortable with. We create a safe and supportive environment where people feel comfortable taking on new challenges and conquering their fears. Our instructors take the time to get to know participants and every session is bespoke. We will always work to the needs and abilities of the group.

Power Boat Coasteer
If you’re looking for something a bit different, why not combine a coasteering session with an adrenaline fuelled ride on a 300hp rib? Thrill seekers will love this daring adventure, which offers the chance to enjoy the magnificent views along the Jurassic Coast at high speeds.
Boat ride from Swanage to Dancing Ledge
You’ll board the state-of-the-art rib at Swanage Pier, before heading to our coasteering site at Dancing Ledge. During the 45-minute boat ride the experienced skipper will race at 50mph and perform skilful manoeuvres as you take in the sites. Don’t worry, you’ll be kitted up read to go with a waterproof and windproof jacket to keep you warm.

Once you’ve reached the coasteering site our instructors will climb aboard and get you read to go. You can then enjoy a fun-filled coasteering session, which involves clambering over rocky outcrops, exploring sea caves and jumping into the waters below.
At the end of the session, climb back aboard the boat and enjoy one last blast back to Swanage. You’ll leave the session feeling revitalised and ready to take on more challenges with Cumulus Outdoors.
Coasteering FAQs
What is the minimum age for coasteering?
You have to be 8 years of age and above to take part in a coasteering session on the Dorset coast.
Where do we park for coasteering?
Please park at the National Trust Spyway Carpark when attending one of our coasteering sessions on the Jurassic Coast.
Address: National Trust Spyway Carpark, Durnford Drove, Langton Matravers, Swanage BH19 3HG
From the main road turn onto Durnford Drove; proceed beyond the turning circle and along the track to the car park.
Once parked, continue to walk along the footpath (700 yards) towards Dancing Ledge. Cross over Priest Way and you will see Spyway Barn ahead of you. Here, our coasteering store is found on your right and there will be signage outside. The instructors will meet you here for the start of your session.
Do you have male / female changing facilities for coasteering?
Yes, we have dedicated changing facilities plus access to water and toilets (with some other operators you would be changing in a public car park with no toilet facilities).
What is the experience of your coasteering instructors?
We pride ourselves on our professional ability, we look and act the part in the water.
You’ll be able to spot our guides instantly as we all wear a uniform and have a safety tube. This enables the guide to point to the exact location of the jumps and tow any participant who is tired.
Our mature, experienced guides have undertaken extensive training in conjunction with the National Coasteering Charter. We always have a minimum of two guides per a maximum of sixteen participants in one group. Normally, in practice, a group size is around two guides per ten participants.
How long does the coasteering session last?
Our coasteering sessions last 3 hours from the time you arrive, till the time you depart. This includes the walk, changing, safety briefs etc. You’ll actually be in the water for one hour which will be enough for you!
Is it far to walk to where we coasteer?
The walk is about 20 minutes from the car park to where we coasteer. You’ll enjoy stunning scenery along the way. Every provider has to walk in.
Will I have to do something I don’t want to do when coasteering?
No. Our ethos is ‘Challenge by Choice.’ We give you the challenges, it’s your choice on how you meet those challenges, so you are empowered to be in control of your coasteering session.
Will I be told what to do during a coasteering session?
We take the time to brief you and constantly make you aware of what is happening and show you what you will be required to do. The training is progressive.
What is the minimum group size for coasteering?
We have a minimum group size of three for our coasteering sessions.
What do I need to bring to coasteering?
All equipment is provided for our coasteering sessions. All you need is your swimming costume, towel and trainers for the water.
Do I need to be able to swim for coasteering?
Yes, we need you to be able to swim 350m to take part in a coasteering session. You will have a buoyancy aid, wetsuit and helmet to keep you afloat and plenty of rest stops. Please note that you will be required to swim in moving water and braking waves.
