Training to Deliver Field Study Sessions to Primary Schools
January 25th, 2022
The Cumulus team attended a training course to help us deliver field study sessions to schools.
The Cumulus team recently attended a training course with Barry Cullimore of Geofieldwork to help us develop and deliver field study sessions to visiting primary schools. The course covered a range of specialist field study activities to enable our instructors to teach rocks, fossils and soils, coastal landforms, history and how plants and animals are adapted to their habitats.
Geology of the Dorset Coast
Throughout the day the team explored various locations along the Jurassic coastline including Acton Dinosaur Footprints, Lulworth Cove, Studland Beach, Kimmeridge Bay, Swanage and historic Corfe Castle.
Even though the instructors naturally had a good level of knowledge about their working environment they were surprised by just how much they didn’t know! When we asked for their feedback, they told us:
“Just seen a great demonstration of how sand dunes are formed on Studland beach, who knew!”
“We had a great afternoon fossil hunting at Kimmeridge Bay and even found fossilised ichthyosaur poo”
“This course has been invaluable in helping us to find new ways to engage young people and to teach them about the fantastic geology, biology, geography and history of the Jurassic Coast.”
School residential trips
At Cumulus Outdoors we are always looking at ways to expand our offering and add greater value to our school residential trips. Our team are continually developing their skillset and we stay in close contact with visiting schools to ensure we deliver a programme that meets their desired learning outcomes.
We use the National Curriculum as a guide to deliver relevant, high quality, outdoor and environmental educational sessions. We hope this real world experience will inspire young people and spark an interest they can continue to explore once home.
Our field studies programmes for primary schools are an excellent starting point and can be further built on in the classroom setting,
