Young people love learning, when learning’s so much fun!
January 30th, 2025
Research supports that children learn faster and more effectively when they are engaged in enjoyable and playful activities.
Fun activities foster intrinsic motivation – the drive to engage in an activity for its enjoyment, rather than for reward. As we all know, sustaining children’s motivation and focus to learn can be challenging, but having fun makes all the difference! Fun activities spark curiosity and enthusiasm, making it easier for young people to engage – and when they enjoy what they’re doing, they’re more likely to retain key lessons.
Cumulus Outdoors offers school and youth groups the opportunity to participate in a range of fun outdoor adventure activities during a residential school trip, either at our Residential Centre or our exclusive Tented Villages.
We work with you to create a bespoke activity programme specifically designed to meet the required outcomes of your group. Each activity combines fun with learning, for example

Coasteering
- Environmental awareness
As students navigate the rugged coastline, they gain valuable insights into the ocean environment firsthand discovering how climate change impacts local ecosystems – fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and the importance of conservation.
- Communication and confidence
Coasteering encourages good verbal communication skills as participants must quickly and accurately deliver and understand instructions. This collaborative effort not only boosts confidence but also helps to build up trust and teamwork among group members.

Ropes Course
- Coordination
As the students navigate the challenging ropes course obstacles, their coordination and motor skills are put to the test! Climbing the leap of faith tower and traversing the ropes requires a good level of general coordination making it a great way for children to stay active while having fun.
- Teamwork
Completing the ropes course is all about collaboration! Children learn the value of teamwork as they support and encourage each other to tackle the challenges together. This shared experience fosters friendships and builds a sense of community.

Tunnelling
- Teamwork and problem solving
As the children navigate through the tunnels, they must strategise, communicate and support one another while conquering various challenges. This collaborative effort not only enhances their navigation skills but also boosts their self-confidence as they orientate themselves though the intricate network of tunnels together.

Orienteering
- Planning
Successful orienteering requires careful planning as teams work together to locate all the hidden control point. This not only enhances critical thinking skills but also encourages collaboration and communication among teammates.
- Physical Education
To make things even more thrilling, we introduce a friendly competitive element! The students are challenged to complete the route as quickly as possible, turning orienteering into an exhilarating race that keeps them active an engaged.
School residentials aren’t just for the summer months! In fact, winter offers unique advantages, particularly for SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) pupils. With fewer students around, the environment can foster even more focused learning and personal growth.
The shorter days and longer evenings also present exciting opportunities for different activities, such as night hikes, stargazing, and bat detection! These experiences can spark curiosity and wonder in students, making for memorable adventures.
Additionally winter season allows for a variety of land-based activities and increased visits to local attractions like Corfe Castle, the Etches Museum, and the Tank Museum. These outings can be linked to the school curriculum, enriching students’ learning experiences while they explore the great outdoors.
