You can now add tunnelling to your bespoke activity programme at Cumulus Outdoors. This fun-filled activity takes place within the grounds of our residential centre in Swanage and is geared towards primary and secondary school children.

The tunnels have been designed to simulate the challenges and features found in natural caves. The man-made network of tunnels allow young people to experience the thrill of caving in a safe and controlled environment. Throughout the activity, pupils will have a blast crawling around the tunnels to reach specific locations and pre-set goals!

Tunnelling can be an adventurous activity to add to your bespoke program at Cumulus Outdoors. Pupils will step out of their comfort zone to explore the underground world, play fun games, get lost and learn all about orienteering and rescuing.

Explore a network of tunnels while developing teamwork to navigation skills.

  • Teamwork and problem solving

    Tunnelling requires students to strategise, communicate and support each other while conquering various challenges within the tunnels. These challenges not only make learning about our history exciting, but also enhance problem solving skills in a dynamic and enjoyable setting. This fosters a strong sense of teamwork and can improve peer relationships.

  • Improve navigation skills and self-confidence

    Students can improve their navigation skills while exploring the network of tunnels. This unique territory will push them to challenge themselves. While exploring tunnels , pupils will also step out of their comfort zone and will come out of the tunnels with more self-confidence and the ability of exploring new unfamiliar environments.

Tunnelling FAQs

What if one of my students doesn’t want to do the tunnelling activity?

During the tunnelling activity we challenge the students to participate voluntarily, to push their comfort zone and test themselves. We operate a ‘challenge by choice’ ethos which allows the students to choose the level they are comfortable with. This may be completing the whole tunnelling challenge or only getting inside the first tunnel!

Do I need to bring any kit with me for the tunnelling activity?

You will need to wear trainers and clothes which can get dirty for the tunnelling activity, however, we do supply full tunnelling kit including overalls, helmet and a head torch.

How long does the tunnelling activity last?

The tunnelling activity session lasts an hour and a half. In this time the students follow a set of challenges which include teamwork both inside and outside of the tunnels.

How many children can take part in the tunnelling activity?

There is a maximum of 20 students taking part in the tunnelling activity at any one time along with 2 teachers.
