Fossil Hunting FAQs

How do I get to Kimmeridge Bay?

If you have a full programme or a succession of activities we will take you to Kimmeridge by coach or minibus. If you are meeting us at Kimmeridge just for this one activity, please be advised that you need to pay a toll for the Kimmeridge Bay access road and that the toll booth only accepts contactless card payments. More information can be found here: https://www.kimmeridgebay.org/plan-your-visit-to-kimmeridge-bay.

What should I wear when fossil hunting or rock pooling?

The rocks at Kimmeridge can be slippery as they only get exposed at low tide. Make sure you wear sturdy, non-slip footwear (wellies if you have them) as well as clothing to protect you – a hat, ideally long sleeve clothing and sun screen in the summer; warm clothing, a waterproof coat and ideally hat and gloves in the winter months and in inclement weather as the bay is exposed to various elements.

What can I see when rock pooling at Kimmeridge?

The best thing about rock pooling at Kimmeridge Bay is that you can see a lot of marine life with the naked eye. As the water is clear and shallow you should be able to spot different species of anemones, crabs, molluscs, fish and seaweed. Seals and dolphins visit the bay occasionally.

Are you allowed to keep the fossils you find at Kimmeridge Bay?

You may collect any loose fossil from the foreshore, however, you are not allowed to use a hammer and chisel even on loose rocks and nodules.
