Customer Safety and Welfare: Kit Cleaning

Jess Gundry, Cumulus Outdoors Senior Instructor

At Cumulus Outdoors, customer safety and welfare lies at the heart of everything we do. To that end, in the challenging times in which we all find ourselves, we have adopted manufacturer recommended guidelines for the appropriate cleaning of our activity kit. The following outlines the kit cleaning measures we plan to take on reopening following outdoor adventure activities. Other operators should check with their own manufacturers for guidance.

Hardware (carabiners, nuts etc)

Disinfection: disinfect using a disinfectant containing quaternary ammonium compounds reinforced with chlorohexidine (e.g. Savlon) in sufficient quantities to be effective. Soak the product for 1 hour at dilutions recommended for general use using clean water not exceeding 25°C then rinse thoroughly. We use Dettol Disinfectant liquid.
Cleaning: if soiled rinse in clean warm water of domestic supply quality (maximum temperature 25°C) with mild detergent at appropriate dilution (pH range 5.5 – 8.5). Thoroughly rinse and dry naturally in a warm ventilated room away from direct heat.
Lubrication: Lubricate the mechanism with a suitable lubricating oil. This should be carried out after cleaning. We use Swarfega Duck Oil.

Ropes

Must use halogen free disinfectants

Not to be rinsed or washed in water hotter than 40 degrees C

Hang out to dry (out of direct sun light)

We use Beal Rope Cleaning Brush, Beal Rope Cleaner, Pure Soap Flakes

All equipment to be washed by hand – not machine.

Everything to be left to air dry (ideally out of direct sun light).

We work in a coastal environment. Salt water and sea spray can cause equipment to corrode faster than inland and fresh water environments. Whenever our kit gets wet, it gets a thorough clean afterwards.

*Oxyfoam statement:

The innovative formulation of Incidin™ OxyFoam S provides the benefits of a patented hydrogen peroxide solution with broad spectrum efficacy. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria (incl. TB), yeasts, fungi, viruses and spores and leaves no active residues due to the active ingredient that decomposes into water and oxygen.

**Dettol statement:

2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus.  It is not yet available for commercial testing.

Specific Dettol products have demonstrated effectiveness (>99.9% inactivation) against coronavirus strains from the same family as the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in third party laboratory testing, when used in accordance with the directions for use.  These products are: Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser Spray, Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser Wipes, Dettol All-In-One Disinfectant Spray, and Dettol Disinfectant Liquid.

Given the structural similarities of the COVID-19 virus to the coronavirus strains tested previously (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, Human Coronavirus), and based on the evidence available to us, we would expect our Dettol products (listed above) to be effective against the new strain. Definitive scientific confirmation of this, as with all other commercially available virucides, can only be provided once testing against COVID-19 Coronavirus has been conducted, following release of the strain by relevant health authorities.
