Paddle Safety: Staying Safe on Kayaks, Canoes & Paddleboards
July 11th, 2023
Paddlesports become increasingly popular in the summer months. Here’s our top tips to keep you safe when kayaking, paddleboarding or canoeing.
British Canoeing launched their #PaddleSafely campaign at the end of June to promote safety awareness when paddling on waterways inland or on the coast. The campaign contained useful tips geared towards a range of paddlesports, including canoeing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. The need for this advice was highlighted by the near tragic incident on 3rd July this year, when a father and son were swept out to sea on their paddleboards.
Why is the paddle sports safety campaign important?
- 5 million adults participated in paddlesport activities in 2022
- The popularity of Stand Up Paddleboarding is increasing with over 3 million adults taking part at least 1-2 times in 2022
- RNLI lifeguards saw a 101% rise in incidents to kayaks/canoes and a 155% rise in incidents to stand up paddleboarders in 2022 compared with 2021
- In 2022 RNLI lifeboat volunteers saw an increase of 20% to call outs to stand up paddleboarders
- Between 2018-2022 RNLI lifeboat volunteers have helped save the lives of 167 people who were kayaking, canoeing or stand up paddleboarding, with 56 lives saved in 2022
British Canoeing and the RNLI have developed 5 key safety messages. This guidance applies to all levels of paddlers.
The 5 key messages for paddlers are:
- Always wear a buoyancy aid / personal flotation device – this will help keep you safe if you become separated from your board or kayak
- Carry a means of communication on you – pack a fully charged mobile device in a waterproof case. You may also choose to bring a VRF radio
- Check the weather – familiarise yourself with the conditions before heading out. Check the wind direction and sea state and remember – if in doubt, don’t go out!
- Tell others of your plans – always make sure someone knows where you are going and what time you aim to be back.
- Paddle within your ability – what can you do? Don’t push yourself beyond your limits. Consider signing up to some lessons so you can work on your technique.
