FAQs - The Essentials

What will my child get to eat on the camp?

Cumulus Outdoors will provide the food throughout the camp, so no need for a packed lunch! There will be a set menu prior to the camp commencement.  All packed lunches are made on-site by the students. All dietary and religious requirements are catered for and we strictly have a no nut on camp policy.

What sort of activities take place on camp?

Depending on the programme, the students will be taking part in Coasteering on the Jurassic Coast at a place called Dancing Ledge as well as Climbing & Abseiling. Kayaking is also a popular activity where students sit in ‘sit on top’ kayaks which are very safe and offer lots of games and laughter. Mackerel Fishing takes place in Swanage, the students hop on to a fishing boat and go mackerel fishing in the middle of Swanage Bay. Anything they catch can then be taken back to camp and the staff will show them how to gut and cook on the fire – yum! Other activities on offer include Bushcraft, Waterpark, High Ropes course and more.

What equipment will my child need?

There will be a kit list sent out to all students. We do stress that it is not necessary to go out and buy all new kit to come on our camps.
So long as you have a sleeping bag and roll mat, torch, appropriate footwear and some warm clothes you will be fine.

Will there be someone ‘on call’ through the night?

A Cumulus policy on all camps is that two members of staff will remain under the main canvas overnight (not in a tent), with a lantern or light on during the night. Should any students have any problems during the night, it is made very easy and clear where the students need to go to find help.

How many staff will be working on the camp?

We typically have a 1:12 ratio, sometimes we exceed this to 1:15 depending on the age of the students.

Will there be qualified first aiders on site?

All staff are first aid qualified, enhanced DBS checked as well as Level 2 Health and Hygiene qualified.
All instructors on the activity sessions are appropriately qualified and their qualifications often exceed the minimum requirement.

First Class!

I'd just like to say a huge thank you for last week. Children (and adults) greatly enjoyed the experience and have arrived back at school full of stories and just about recovered from the week. Please thank Havi, Beth and Nathan on our behalf; the care that the children received was first class. We look forward to seeing you next year,”

Fantastic time

I just wanted to drop you a quick e-mail to say what a fantastic time we all had with you guys at Cumulus. Despite the rain we were all buzzing on our return. Please pass on our sincere thanks to Roxy, SJ, Tom and the rest of the team there. They were all great.

I asked the kids to write a brief sentence or two about the trip…

“This was the best experience ever!”
“The food was so tasty!”
“I loved the songs and rhymes”
“Staff were amazing”

So many great comments.

I have had so many positive e-mails from parents about the trip. So, again thank you so much.

Can I wish you all a wonderful Summer.

I'm off to start planning how I can get on the trip again next year!

I just wanted to drop a quick message into the main office so that you are all aware how pleased, grateful and appreciative not only I, but the school and parents too, for how much the children enjoyed their week in Dorset.

It was great to get them away from their computers and phones for the week and get them doing things that kids their age should be doing; exploring, climbing, foraging and singing ridiculous songs at night time instead of sleeping! We were in more than safe hands with Luke, Paul and Alice on camp and it was also impressive to have Roxie, Sam and Tom pay us a visit while we were there too.

Having worked in similar environments to this prior to my teaching days (last week makes me miss it!) I recall how difficult it is to please everyone and with quite a range in characters I thought it was going to be a tricky one getting some kids involved. I was wrong. With Luke's entertaining and encouraging ways, Paul's encyclopaedic knowledge and Alice cooking up a storm there was plenty to keep everyone happy.

All of the activities pushed the children beyond their comfort zone; from the shy to more adventurous they all had their own challenges to tackle. This kept some in check, gave the quieter ones a chance to shine and unearthed a sense of adventure in some that they never knew existed - who knew how good fresh mackerel cooked over the fire could be or that we were camped so close to our supply of groceries tasty enough to supply Waitrose. In all it was just what the kids needed and exceeded all that I could have hoped they would take from it.

Thank you to all involved with organising our week away and thanks in particular, again, to Luke, Paul and Alice.

All the best for the remainder of the season, I'm off to start planning how I can get on the trip again next year!

Great Camp

The camp was a great success, all our students had a great time and gained much from the experience. The staff and instructors were very caring towards the students particularly when they were ill and also dealt with behavioural discipline issues in a consistent manner.
The camp ran well, it seemed very well organised with timings feeling just right with no one getting rushed but moving activities on if attention was waining. There was also great flexibility and adaptiveness with situations outside of camp control with an excellent Plan B when weather prevented coasteering! Great attention to detail especially with dietary requirements. Thank you!
