Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential Success

August 20th, 2020

Our fist Duke of Edinburgh DofE Gold Residential of the year was a fantastic success!

We recently hosted our first Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential of the year at the Cumulus Outdoors Residential Centre in Swanage. We are delighted that our comprehensive preparation and revised operating protocols enabled us to provide some young people with this experience, following what has been a difficult start to the year.

What does the DofE Gold Residential involve?

Our Duke of Edinburgh Residentials offer Gold DofE Award participants a range of unique experiences that broaden horizons and challenges their outlook. At the heart of the residential programme is the undertaking of a purposeful experience with people who are not their usual companions, all working towards a common goal.

The Gold Residential aims to reward participants with a sense of personal achievement, enhanced social relationships with new people, and a truly life changing experience. This is achieved via participation in a varied outdoor adventure activity programme, team building games and exploration of our natural environment..

How have Cumulus Outdoors made residentials Covid-secure?

“The revised programme has resulted in smaller groups in larger accommodation areas at our residential centre” said Operations Director Tom Campbell-Hill. “This, combined with new operating protocols for the activity programme has enabled us to deliver a fun and safe week”

“It’s been great to see the revised programme working so well” said Tom, “from the comprehensive planning right through the management and delivery of the programme, every aspect was carefully considered to ensure the programme matched the objectives of the Gold Residential and the expectations of the participants while operating safely within the required guidelines.”

School and Youth residential planning

We are committed to providing the same level of planning, management and care to our school residential programmes as and when we’re able to deliver them again.

“The considered and ultimately successful approach we have taken for our DofE Gold Residential programmes this year reflects our approach to our residential school trips” said Tom. “We’re very much looking forward to being able to welcome school and youth groups again to provide an exceptional residential experience.”

“Please could you pass our thanks on to everyone involved in organising and running such a fantastic DofE Gold residential. Our son Sam had a fantastic few days with you and came away with having learnt new skills, made new friends and with a renewed sense of self-confidence. We are enormously grateful for the work that went in behind the scenes to make this week possible.  We can only begin to imagine how difficult the planning for this week must have been in the current circumstances".

“Absolutely amazing week! The activities were well-planned, varied and overseen by instructors who were friendly and professional. As an amateur in watersports, I left confident in coasteering, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding etc. The powerboat trip was a really nice finish to the week.

In terms of food, we were able to design our own menus. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this was cooked well by Roxie. There were also plenty of provisions of snacks throughout the day - much needed after strenuous activities. On the last day, we were even treated to fresh cod and chips on Swanage sea front".

"The accommodation was more than adequate: bunk beds and en-suites. The glamping segment was removed due to Covid restrictions, though I don’t think many of us minded that.
Overall, for £300, there isn’t a single way to fairly criticise Cumulus Outdoors. I would not have been surprised to spend in excess of double that price for such an experience. They deserve huge thanks for putting a nervous person like me at ease and making them truly enjoy an experience they had previously dreaded".
