The Friendly Food Club!
August 30th, 2023
During the HAF provision for local children who qualify for free school meals, we often have the opportunity to use the services of outside agencies who are partnered with Dorset Council to provide sessions which enhance the delivery of, and meet the desired outcomes, of the Summer in Dorset HAF Scheme.
Earlier this month we were lucky enough to have Sally and her team from The Friendly Food Club join us for a healthy food session with our children aged 9-12 years.
Aims and objectives
The aims of this session were to firstly and most importantly, encourage the children to become interested in food, then to teach simple food preparation, learn about healthy food and to prepare their own lunch for that day.
Creative food preparation!
The activity morning was loud and colourful!
Everyone was keen to get hands on and create their own version of healthy salad wraps and fresh fruit salad with roasted oats and fresh natural yoghurt. All ingredients were appropriate for the dietary requirements of the children.
During the preparation stage everyone was encouraged to ask questions about the source of the food stuffs being used and to share any previous knowledge and experience of their cooking at home or school with everyone.
Safety first!
The children were also taught how to safely use knives and other equipment when preparing their ingredients and the importance of not cross-contaminating their equipment. During the morning, frying pans were used to warm the wraps, and Sally closely oversaw their use to ensure safety.
A healthy food session with no waste and loads of smiles
Everyone really enjoyed the practical morning. This was not only seen in the wonderful smiling faces but also the very little amount of food waste generated during this session! A huge thank you to Sally and her team at The Friendly Food Club for a most worthwhile educational but fun morning. We loved it!
