Planning your 2020 school residential trip

The summer holidays have come to an end and we are now back to school, so this means it’s time to start looking to the year ahead and planning your 2020 school residential trip.

Outdoor adventure school residential trips are an excellent way to enhance learning and build upon foundations learnt in the classroom. They also allow young people to develop their skillset and try a range of exciting activities, such as coasteering, kayaking, fishing and bushcraft.

Overcoming new challenges and working collectively as a team can help improve students’ relationships with their peers and foster better relations with teaching staff. Spending time away from home in an unfamiliar environment can bolster self-confidence and help instil problem solving skills and a sense of independence.

Organising a school trip

If you’re in charge of organising your school or youth group’s residential trip in 2020, there are a couple of things you should consider during the planning process. Careful forward planning will ensure the trip runs as smoothly as possible and will help guarantee an enjoyable time for all.

Book ahead

Your school residential trip might seem like a long way away, but it’s always best to book early to secure your desired dates and avoid disappointment. The summer months are our most popular time of year, however both spring and autumn are also fantastic options. There’s no need to worry about bad weather, we’re prepared for all eventualities. After all, in the outdoor world there’s no such thing as bad weather – just the wrong clothing!

Select a residential option

Do you prefer a hard-top residential centre or do you have group who would prefer to sleep under canvas? In addition to our tented village option, we are currently working on securing a hard-top residential centre so we’ll soon be in the position to offer both types of accommodation for residential trips taken in 2020. Think about which option would be best suited to your group and let us know at the time booking – we’ll sort out the rest!

Choose your activities

The team at Cumulus Outdoors have a vast amount of experience at leading outdoor adventure activities and are able to create a bespoke programme around the needs of your group. Our team of experienced instructors are experts at engaging participants of all ages and can help groups overcome challenges and face their fears. You can choose from a range of water and land-based activities as well as educational day trips across Dorset.

Define learning outcomes

Are there certain learning outcomes you would like your students to achieve during the residential? Is the trip supporting a certain aspect of the curriculum or subject? Communicating this to us prior to arrival can help our instructors structure the activities and programmes to ensure students get the most of every aspect of their stay.

Steve Thompson, Marketing Director of Cumulus says that there’s never been a better time to book a residential course.

“We always recommend that teachers book their school residentials as far into the future as possible. 2020 is shaping up to be a great year for us. We are really looking forward to welcoming more schools than ever and showcasing our fabulous residential facilities and the great natural beauty that Dorset has to offer.”

Don’t just take our word for it – read what teachers have to say about our school residential trips.

“We took 19 Y6 pupils for a five-day camping and adventurous activities residential organised entirely by Cumulus. We cannot recommend this company enough. The experiences were incredible. Coasteering was astonishingly brilliant. Fishing on the pier and paddling in the sea were such treats. Safety was absolutely paramount and the experience leaders were highly skilled, patient and encouraging. Kayaking was such enormous fun, made even more so by the games we played on the water. The finale of our week was a trip to the beach. It was a fitting end to such a super week. We did not want to go home. This was amazing value for money and an unforgettable experience for our school leavers.”  Trip Advisor review
