The Cumulus team go through rigorous training to ensure they’re up to date with industry standards.
At Cumulus Outdoors our team of experienced instructors undertake rigorous training and development to stay up to date with the latest industry standards. We believe the benefit of ongoing training cannot be overstated, and that it is essential, to continually evaluate our processes to build a strong and capable team.
We know, from first hand experience, that a motivated team is a productive and efficient team and quite simply, the more we put in the more we get out as a result. Therefore, we require our staff to attend regular training throughout the year to ensure they’re always top of their game.
We truly believe we have the best instructors in the business and together their experience and expertise has cemented our place as leading outdoor activity specialists. The health, safety and enjoyment of young people in our care is of utmost importance and our team work tirelessly to ensure their skills match the high standards we strive to maintain
Cumulus Outdoors staff training and development
We’ve achieved a lot in the past year and have lots planned in 2022 to ensure customers have an exciting and safe experience with us. Below we’ve listed just some of things we’ve been up to behind the scenes and detail our plans ahead of reopening for 2022.

2021 Training
- In the Summer our seasonal team achieved their Beach Lifeguard award
- In the Winter our instructors Jess, Jack and Mike completed their Lifeguard Trainer Assessor course. As a result, they will be training the new staff team for their Beach Lifeguard awards in Summer 2022
- We organised a joint training exercise with Swanage Lifeboat and we’re planning another one for the start of this season
- In December our Senior Instructor, Jess completed and renewed her PPE Inspector course (required every 3 years)
- The core instructing team have also completed their FREC 3 (First Responder) Award over the winter with more of the team scheduled to complete the Award in 2022

2022 Training plans
- Our instructors will be undertaking a field studies training course in January to add more value to our current school residential trips. This will also enable us to offer more dedicated field studies trips in Dorset during the quieter months
- Paddlesports Leader courses are scheduled
- Archery is a new activity for this year so a training course is also to be scheduled
- April is our primary training month when we check our instructors are up to date with current best practice across all disciplines
The Cumulus Outdoors team are looking forward to another season of adventure activities on the Jurassic Coast. We’ve expanded our offering over winter, and can’t wait to resume our full range of outdoor education activities in an exciting and safe environment.
We’re delighted to be welcoming new and returning schools to both our residential centre and tented villages in Swanage this spring. It will be great to have school and youth groups back to enjoy and unforgettable experience in the great outdoors.
