Helping Local Schools Rediscover the Great Outdoors

November 4th, 2021

We’ve helped a number of local schools discover the benefits of learning outside the classroom.

While we’ve been busy with our school residential, activity days and DofE Gold residential groups this year we’ve also been helped a number of local schools experience learning outside the classroom. Working within the guidelines in place at the time, we were able to provide fun outdoor experiences that encouraged students to work together in a different but safe environment.

Through a variety of outdoor adventure sessions we were able to achieve various of learning outcomes. These included building confidence, improving leadership qualities and developing new motor and social skills.

Outdoor adventure activity day in Swanage

We organised an activity day for year 6 pupils at St Mary’s Swanage which included tag archery and rifle shooting at our camp ground on the shores of Poole Harbour. One of the teachers, Rebecca, was so pleased we were able to organise the day and gave our team some wonderful feedback.

We loved being out in the middle of nowhere, enjoying the fresh air and an environment some children did not know existed”.

We also ran an activity day for 64 year 6 pupils from Sandford St Martin Primary School. They enjoyed a round-robin day in July which included tag archery, rifle shooting and bushcraft. In fact they enjoyed the day so much that next summer we’re organising an activity residential overnight on-site at the school!

Working with local primary and secondary schools

We worked with The Swanage School to enable 563 year 7 students to enjoy paddleboarding, raft building and orienteering, whilst 71 year 8 students took part in rifle shooting, tag archery and bushcraft. More recently we delivered water based safety skills through curriculum sessions working with the school.

Operations Director at Cumulus Outdoors Tom Campbell-Hill said

As much as we have enjoyed being able to once again open our doors to school groups and students from around the country, it has given us equal pleasure to help to enable our local schools to get back to enjoying everything the great outdoors and our local area has to offer”.
