While 2023 was another very good and highly successful year, with many schools enjoying all that the stunning Jurassic Coast in Dorset has to offer, our thoughts turn very quickly to the new 2024 season.
Preparation and planning is key to providing the high quality of activities and experiences across both our Residential Centre in Swanage and our exclusive Tented Villages situated on the shores of Poole Harbour. With bespoke programmes comprising a selection of awesome adventures and experiences, including our new ropes course and tunnelling adventure at the Residential Centre, the safety of all our young people lies at the core of everything we do, and our Chief Instructor, Jack Le Sueur, is busy ensuring that everything and everyone is ready.
Jack’s tasks for 2024
Jack has a range of tasks to manage and oversee as we prepare for 2024:
- Monthly safety checks on the high ropes and the annual inspection
- Checks on harnesses, helmets and buoyancy aids
- All climbing and high ropes hardware go through a 5 point function and safety inspection
- New ropes for climbing measured and cut
- VHF and PLB checked with the Maritime Authority
- Staff placed on development courses for activity and safety management
- Coasteering and climbing external assessment for guides and assistant guides
- Technical advisor visits
- External paddlesport safety and rescue refresher for all staff
- Annual review of all Risk Assessments, Site Specific Operational Procedures, Site Specific Risk Assessments
- Completion of new activity qualifications NCC Guide award and RLSS Beach Lifeguard Trainer assessor
- Instructor sign off by activity specialists for rifles, tag archery, mountain biking, high ropes, aeroball, bushcraft, axe throwing, team games
- Lifeguard reassessment for beach lifeguards ongoing training
- First aid reassessment with a 16hr outdoor first aid and FREC 3 qualifications
- Situation and rescue training for all coasteering instructors
- First aid monthly kit checks and individual instructors’ kits renew
- DBS re-check for all onsite staff
